The Life and work of M.C. Escher: A Son’s Reminiscences

    With George Escher

“The most down-to-earth man,” is how George Escher, son of the universally popular graphic artist M.C. Escher, describes his father. Yet, Escher’s art indicates a unique perspective, extraordinary skill, and a complex understanding of the world. George, the eldest of three sons, was born in Rome in 1926 and spent the first ten years of his life there, often watching his father create prints in the workshop above the family apartment. After moving to Switzerland, then Belgium during the Second World War, the family settled in Baarn, Netherlands where the artist lived out his life. An aeronautical engineer educated in Delft, George moved to Canada with his wife in 1958 and donated his entire collection of prints by his father to the National Gallery of Canada. Discover a son’s personal vision of M.C. Escher’s work as he recounts his memories of his father and shares special anecdotes about the man and the artist.
